Pool Rules and Regulations
The pool has a set of rules and regulations which the lifeguards will enforce throughout the pool season. You can download a copy of the rules and regulations here. The rules and regulations are published on this page for your reference.


RULES AND REGULATIONS
OF
THE BROOKFIELD SWIMMING CLUB, INC.

PURPOSE. These rules are established for the benefit and protection of you, your family and your guests, as well as to assure the safe and sanitary operation of pool facilities.

II. GENERAL. These rules shall govern all activities associated with the pool.
Special temporary rules for pool parties may also be established by the Board of Directors.

A. Members are responsible for the behavior of their children and their guests.
B. The Club is not responsible for the loss, theft, or damage of personal property.
C. Members are responsible for damage (beyond normal wear and tear) to pool property caused by themselves, their children or guests.
D. All persons shall conduct themselves in an orderly manner with appropriate dress, no loud, abusive, or profane language, and no arguing with the pool management staff.

III. DEFINITION OF MEMBERS. ARTICLE III, Section 5, Issuance of Membership defines membership as follows:
"Section 5. Issuance and use of membership. A membership shall be issued in the name of one or more adult members of a family, and this membership shall entitle all persons in the family or other residents of the household to utilize the Club's facilities as long as such membership shall remain in good standing. A family is defined as all persons of the same immediate family who permanently reside in the same housing unit. The immediate family is defined as: husband, wife, children, parents and dependent brothers and sisters. The board of Directors may, upon written request of any member determine whether a particular person is to be considered within the family or other resident of the household."

The above definition is expanded to include the following rules regarding specific age groups:
A. 21 years of age or older - considered an adult
B. 12 years of age through 20 years of age - may use the pool facilities unaccompanied.
C. Children who turn 8 years of age during the calendar year of the current swim season through 11 years of age - must be accompanied by an adult family member. Such children may, upon written permission of their parents, take a test and, if successful, come to the pool alone.
This test shall be administered by the Pool Manager and consists of:
1. Swimming one length of the main swimming area (25 meters).
2. Jumping in and floating for a two minute period (sculling and dinning allowed).
Treading water for a two minute period.

Children less than 8 years of age, and those 8 to 11 who have not passed their pool test, must be accompanied by an adult family member or by a pool member 18 years of age or older provided a release is signed by a parent of such child prior to each visit to the pool.

IV. IDENTIFICATION. Identification of members to gain entry into the pool shall be provided by photograph. Suitable family photographs shall be submitted in accordance with procedures outlined in the Spring Mailer. Members must sign in at the front gate when entering the pool. If more than one member of a family enters the pool at the same time, only one
sign-in is necessary. You must sign in every time that you enter the pool.

V. SAFETY. The safety and health rules that follow are dictated by acceptable pool practice, Red Cross instructions, and the Fairfax County code, Chapter 69, Swimming Pool Ordinance which takes exception.
A. Under no circumstances shall any person be allowed in the pool unless a lifeguard is on duty.
B. No dunking or rough play is allowed in the pool, except as supervised water sports. No rough-housing on the runways, diving boards, slides, or in the dressing or shower rooms will be tolerated.
C. Only one person at a time is permitted 0 the diving board. Hanging or bouncing on the diving board is not permitted. Do not dive into the pool until the previous diver has cleared the area. Dive only in the forward position.
D. Deep-water slide. Only one person at a time is permitted on the slide. Walk carefully up the steps and do not slide into the pool until the previous swimmer has cleared the area. Slide only feet-first position. Al swimmers using the deep-water slide must be able to swim to the side of the pool unassisted and without floatation devices.
E. The use of kick boards, rafts, air mattresses, tubes, water balls, and such equipment may be permitted by the Pool Manager, depending upon the size and nature of the crowd. No equipment of any kind is permitted in the diving area.
F. No running along the concrete decks around the pool.
G. No glass or other breakable objects will be permitted in the pool enclosure. Food and drinks will be permitted in designated eating areas only. No gum will be chewed in the pool.
H. Rubber soled shoes are the only footwear allowed on the deck. No street shoes are permitted.
I. People must stay clear of the lifeguard stations. The guards are on duty a all times. They should not be engaged in unnecessary casual or social conversation on he deck or in the office. 'Cannonballing" or other distracting actions near the lifeguard stations are prohibited.
J. Shallow End Slide. Safety dictates no head-first sliding. The slide is the two foot shallow area is for young children only - children must be shorter than the maximum height line (48") found on the slide ladder.
Intoxicated persons are not allowed on pool property. If the Gate Guards suspect the use of or smell alcohol, they will refuse admission to the pool. No alcoholic beverages shall be permitted except at scheduled adult parties. No illegal drugs are permitted at any time.

L. Non-swimming children who venture beyond the shallow roped area must be accompanied by a responsible person at least 18 years of age or older.
M. Children under 16 years of age shall observe a 10 minute break period every hour. This does not apply to non-swimming children in the wading pool. The break period shall be observed starting at 10 minutes before the hour and end on the hour.
N. Use of the wading pool shall be limited to non-swimming children of 6 years of age and under. .
O. The 2 foot shallow areas of the pool is reserved for young children (and accompanying adults) - no teens, no rough-housing.
P. No wheeled items are permitted on the pool deck. Strollers and baby carriages may be taken across the deck when entering and leaving the pool area. However, they must be parked on the grassy area or along the fence at all other times.
Q. During swim lessons, only students and instructors are allowed in the main pool when lifeguard is on duty.

HEALTH.
A. Persons having any skin disease, sore or inflamed eyes, cold, nasal, or ear discharge, any communicable disease, excessive sunburn, open sores, or bandages of any kind shall not be permitted in the pool. It is your responsibility to apply the meaning and intent of this rule to your children.
B. Spitting, spouting water, and blowing noses is strictly forbidden in the pool.
C. Any intentional unhealthy behavior which results in pool closure will be subject to disciplinary actions, which may result in suspension of pool membership.
D. Bathers are required to take a cleansing shower before entering the water. Bathers who subsequently use skin oils are encouraged to re-shower before entering the water.
E. All injuries occurring on the premises of the pool must be reported immediately to the Pool Manger and documented by the Pool Manager or his assistant.
F. All bathers shall use the toilet facilities whenever necessary. Children who are not toilet trained must wear swimmers or diapers and plastic pants. Please keep a constant check on your child's diapers as "accidents" will cause the entire pool to be closed to all swimmers for several hours.
G. No pets will be allowed in the pool enclosure (fenced perimeter).
H. Trash and litter shall be placed in the proper containers.

VII. OTHER.
A lap lane is established from the 5 foot end to the 3 foot end, cordoned off from the other pool area by a blue and white lap lane rope. When anyone is swimming laps in this area, others are not permitted to use this area for general swimming. The lap lane rope may be removed at the manager's discretion during the week but will be in place at 5:00 pm weekdays and all day on Saturdays, Sundays, and Holidays. Adult swimming only in this area from 6-9 p.m., weekdays.

B. Deep end closing. The deep end may be closed only with the permission of the Pool Manager or his assistant. If no one is using the diving board, you may request that the deep end be closed to diving and then be used for general swimming.
C. Games may be checked out from the gate guard for use only at the pool. You are responsible to return the game when finished to the Gate Guard. If the game is damaged Of pieces are missing, you are responsible to replace the game.
D. Warning ropes with blue and white buoys separate the deep end from the 5 foot area and the 2 foot shallow area from the remainder of the pool. No hanging or sitting on these ropes is permitted. Others cannot seethe depth changes 'in the pool and damage may be done to the rope, buoys, or to the hooks in the side of the pool.
E. Gas cooking grills are available for your use at the pool by permission of the Pool Manager or his assistant. You may reserve the use of a grill anytime that you wish - first come, first serve. Grills will be used only by adult pool members, shall be used in the grassy area away from other pool members, cleaned, and put away when you are finished.
F. If you find articles that you think are lost, please turn them in to the Pool Manager. Lost articles may be examined at any time by applying to the Pool Manager. Articles not claimed within 2 weeks will be disposed of at the discretion of the Pool Manager and the Board of Directors.
G. All bathers must be attired in swimsuits. No blue jeans, shorts, or cutoffs will be permitted as swim wear in the pool.
H. No weapons (e.g. knives, sharp instruments, guns, clubs, etc.) will be allowed on pool property.

VIII. GUESTS
Guests are non-pool members using the pool facilities with the permission of and accompanied by an adult pool member.
All guests must be registered at the pool by a member and pay the necessary fees. A form for this registration is available at the front desk.
C. Members who are 12 years of age through 20 may bring guests who are 12 years of age or older. Adult members (21 years of age or older) may bring guests of any age.
D. Members are responsible for the actions of their guests and must remain at the pool with their guests.
E. Parents and grandparents of the heads of a member household are exempt from paying guest fees.
F. Guests 3 years of age and younger are exempt from paying guest fees.
G. Guests not intending to use the pool will only be admitted to the pool area without charge at the discretion of the Pool Manager or his assistant.
H. Conditions not covered above shall be submitted in writing to the Board of Directors for resolution.
I. Each membership is limited to a maximum of 10 guests per visit. For organized groups, see Section 9 below.

 

 

ORGANIZED GROUPS
Organized groups (e.g. Little League, boy Scouts, Girl Scouts) may be granted use of the pool during normal operating hours. A written request to the Social Director is required a minimum of 7 days in advance, and Board approval is required. A pool member must remain with the group at all times. The group must abide by the rules and regulations of the Swim club. Non-member guest fees apply.

AUTHORIZED POOL PARTIES
A. Attendance of members and guest at authorized pool parties shall he in accordance with rules established by the Board of Directors.
B. Members who wish to have a party at the pool during normal operating hours can do so after approval by the Board of Directors. Contact the Social Director. Guest fees will apply. See -party contract for specific details. No alcoholic beverages will be permitted.

XI. DRIVING AND PARKING
A. Only legally licensed and registered motor vehicles shall be allowed on the pool property. Mini-bikes and go-carts (and other unlicensed vehicles) are not allowed on pool property. The use of skates, skateboards, big-wheels, etc. are prohibited on pool property, including the parking lot.
B. Drive slowly and carefully in the parking area and keep the entrance to the parking lot clear at all times.
C. You and your guests shall park vehicles in the pool parking area. No street parking or parking on the driveways is allowed. The parking lot shall be used for parking only - no horseplay or loitering will be allowed.
D. Blowing horns, except as necessary to avoid an accident, is not permitted. Children shall not be summoned by blowing horns. Overnight parking is prohibited on the pool property unless prior permission is received from the Board of Directors.
E. Bicycles shall be parked only in the bicycle racks provided.
F. Handicap parking is by permit only.

XII. ENFORCEMENT AND PENALTIES.

A. Adherence to these rules is you responsibility. You are to read and discuss these rules with your children and assure they observe all rules and obey the instructions of all on-duty pool management personnel.
B. The enforcement of these rules is the duty of the Pool Manager, his assistant, the lifeguards, the gate guards, and you. Violators of these rules may be expelled from the pool area for up to 7 days. Repeated violators will be referred to the Board of Directors for disciplinary action.
C. Beyond normal operating hours, no one is allowed inside the pool enclosure. Any member caught in the pool area after operating hours will be considered to be trespassing and will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. Member privileges shall be subject to penalties as specified in the By-Laws.
D. Violators of the rules concerning intoxicating beverages or drugs shall be suspended for the remainder of the swim season.
Appropriate action by-the Board of Directors will be directed at those who violate the Rules and Regulations. These rules are for your safety and protection.

EXPULSION AMD SUSPENSION. ARTICLE III, Section 11, Brookfield Swim Club By-Laws states the Club policy on expulsion and suspension as follows:

"Section 11. Expulsion and suspension.
(a) Membership privileges of a member who does not comply with the rules and regulations promulgated by our under authority of the Board of Directors shall be subject to the penalties (suspension or expulsion) set forth in such rules and regulations. The Board of Directors may authorize the Pool Manager to suspend the membership privileges of any individual for a period not exceeding seven days as a disciplinary measure provided for in the pool regulations. Membership privileges may be suspended for a longer period of time, or a member expelled, or any individual entitled to the facilities of the Club permanently denied such entitlement, for due cause and after having been granted an opportunity for a hearing before the Board of Directors. Expulsion of a member or permanent denial of an individual's use of the facilities of the Club shall be effective upon the affirmative vote of at least five Directors. Due cause for suspension, expulsion of a member or permanent denial of an individual's privileges shall consist of a violation of these By-Laws, or the rules and regulations of the Club, or conduct detrimental to its members."
